Kangaroos

IT’S CONSIDERED BAD form to cull your national emblem. So Australians get upset when farmers and conservationists, pointing out that their favourite marsupial is a plant-damaging pest, try to have them shot or poisoned. Still, the fact remains that kangaroos who chomp happily on grazing land set aside for sheep and cattle are a serious nuisance. Now scientists are thrilled to have discovered a humane answer: the urine of the wild dog known as the dingo.

Dingos are terrifying predators to kangaroos, which can be sent into a frenzy even at the bark of a domestic dog. Trials co-ordinated by a behavioural ecologist at Curtin University in Perth have revealed that carefully placed dingo urine will make them head for the hills at the first sniff.

However, isolating urine from these wild dogs, keeping it fresh and shipping it across the country packed with liquid nitrogen is a complicated and expensive business, so scientists are now trying to produce a synthetic version to keep farmers happy and the iconic kangaroos in their place.
